Jakarta – In a shocking development, a total of 18 Indonesian police officers are suspected to have been involved in the alleged mugging of Malaysian citizens who were attending the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) at JIExpo, Kemayoran. The officers have been detained and are currently being held in a special facility under police watch.
“The total number remains the same at 18, consisting of officers from various ranks, including those from the local police station, regional police, and national police,” revealed the Chief of the Propam Division of the Indonesian National Police, Irjen Abdul Karim, on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
The motive behind the alleged mugging is still under investigation. Karim stated that the focus is currently on the ethical implications rather than immediate criminal proceedings. “We’re still looking into the motive, as it involves several different departments. For now, we’re focusing on the ethical aspects,” he explained.
Earlier, Karim had revealed that the total amount of money allegedly stolen during the incident was Rp 2.5 billion (approximately USD 175,000). The investigation, which involves external entities such as the Komisi Kepolisian Nasional (Kompolnas), is ongoing. The Malaysian victims have also filed official complaints.
“We’re coordinating with Kompolnas and other external parties, and we’re open to their involvement. The Malaysian victims have also come forward and filed official complaints,” Karim added.
