Titan Ridge Volcano Eruption Inundates Manus Coast with Pumice

An undersea volcano in the Bismarck Sea, identified as the Titan Ridge volcano, has blanketed the coastlines of Manus Province, Papua New Guinea, with thick layers of pumice rock. This geological event has trapped seafaring communities, disrupted local fishing, and created immediate concerns regarding food, fresh water, and medical access for vulnerable populations.

Why is the Titan Ridge volcano causing such disruption in Manus?

The disruption stems from the massive accumulation of pumice—a lightweight, highly porous rock formed when lava cools rapidly during an eruption. Since the volcano began erupting sporadically in early May, thick masses of this stone have washed ashore, creating a physical barrier between coastal villages and the sea.

For residents of Baon village, the situation is paralyzing. Councillor Raymond Simeku, who represents one of the worst-impacted areas, described the environment as being “sort of like a desert” where villagers are stuck and unable to travel. “We are stuck in the village, unable to travel out to market or go out to fish right now … and it’s continuing to build up,” Simeku said.

Beyond the immediate physical blockage, there is a significant environmental threat. Dense and stagnant coverage of pumice in coastal areas can block essential sunlight, which may kill coral reefs, fish, and other marine animals that local communities rely on for survival.

Did you know?
Pumice is unique because it is so light and porous that it can actually float on the surface of the ocean, allowing volcanic material to travel long distances via wind and currents.

How is the pumice affecting local food and water supplies?

The inundation has hit the two most vital resources for island life: food and water. Because residents of Baon rely heavily on boats to fish and trade their crops, the ability to move has been stripped away. The sea itself has become treacherous; Simeku reported that one attempt to take a boat out nearly resulted in the vessel sinking “like quicksand.”

Water security is also reaching a breaking point. Because the coastline is covered in volcanic rock, villagers can no longer use the sea for washing. This has forced them to use precious drinking water for bathing instead. “Our water supplies are actually running down because so much water has been consumed just for bathing,” Simeku noted, adding that more water tanks are urgently needed.

This lack of mobility also extends to healthcare. Villagers typically depend on boats to reach medical clinics, leaving them isolated during this period of high anxiety.

What is the government’s response to the volcanic activity?

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has confirmed that the government is conducting urgent assessments of the situation. The administration is focused on the safety and wellbeing of the island communities in and around Manus.

In a recent statement, Mr. Marape said, “We understand that discharges from this undersea volcanic activity are affecting movement, traffic, and creating uncertainty amongst our people.” The government is currently determining the most effective way to respond and is working to prepare for “worst-case scenarios.”

How often do these undersea volcanic eruptions occur?

While the current situation is dire, experts suggest this is a rare natural phenomenon. Steven Saunders from the Rabaul Volcanic Observatory noted that an event of this nature might only occur once or twice in a century.

According to Saunders, while the volcano remains active, the intensity of the eruptions has reduced significantly. However, the danger has not passed. “It is still active, but much reduced. But being a natural phenomenon it may pick up again,” he cautioned. Even as production slows, the existing pumice is being transported by wind and ocean currents, meaning it may continue to build up on islands or disperse unpredictably.

Scientific Insight:
The Titan Ridge volcano is located approximately 125 kilometres south-east of Manus in the Bismarck Sea. Its activity can be felt on land, with residents in Baon village reporting hearing noises and seeing lights from the eruptions during the night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pumice?

Pumice is a lightweight, highly porous rock created when lava from a volcanic eruption cools very rapidly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the volcano affecting travel in Manus?

Masses of floating pumice have trapped seafaring villagers, making it difficult or impossible to use boats for fishing, trading, or accessing medical services.

Where is the Titan Ridge volcano located?

The volcano is an undersea volcano located in the Bismarck Sea, about 125 kilometres south-east of Manus, Papua New Guinea.
