The Investigation and the Discovered Equipment

The Athens Medical Association licensed the office on July 4, 2013, with no written complaints recorded until the death of Mazonakis. According to the association, a doctor informally signaled concerns regarding equipment in July 2025, prompting three unannounced inspections that initially failed to locate any plasmapheresis devices. On July 23, 2026, Ioanna Gaka notified the association that she had acquired a backup accessory for an existing ozone therapy device. However, on September 4, 2025—just five days before Mazonakis died—an association employee reviewed the application and found a June 5 invoice for 29,509.98 euros describing an “INUSpheresis Double Filtration Device.”

A fresh inspection was scheduled, but Mazonakis died on September 9. When inspectors entered the clinic the following day, they located two plasmapheresis machines. The Athens Medical Association stated that such devices are strictly unauthorized for that category of medical office and that no permits were issued for them. Furthermore, authorities identified a second location on Patriarchou Ioakeim Street in Kolonaki registered as a medical equipment import company, where a relative of the doctor serves as manager and Theodoropoulos’s name was previously displayed on the doorbell, according to ERT.

Over time, his practice shifted toward integrative medicine at his The Stem Cell Clinic in Kolonaki, where he promoted CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells—which he branded as "Divine Cells." By September 2025, his clinic claimed to have performed 600 CD34+ cell therapies between February 2023 and September 2025, while ERT reported he claimed over 1,000 procedures and presented international presentations on reversing biological age using cellular therapy.

Following her academic work, her public biographies cited training in molecular biology, obstetrics, and various alternative modalities including homeopathy, acupuncture, live blood cell analysis, and shamanic practices. However, following the incident, the Athens Medical Association and independent fact-checkers at Ellinika Hoaxes stated that Gaka holds no registered medical specialty. Additionally, fact-checkers found no record of a master's degree in "Quantum Medicine" from the University of Hawaii, noting that Quantum University is a separate private institution lacking institutional academic accreditation from the Hawaii university system.

Regulatory Actions and Witness Testimonies

The Athens Medical Association has requested the Panhellenic Medical Association to strip both doctors of their licenses to practice medicine. Additionally, the Greek anti-money laundering authority initiated financial checks on the pair, though officials noted that such audits do not constitute a proven financial crime. Investigators also reviewed reports of complications from past patients; a nephrologist told ERT that a female patient from Cyprus underwent plasmapheresis at the same facility a year prior and required hospitalization at a private clinic.

On September 21, hypnotherapist Nasos Komianos appeared before the investigator as a witness rather than a suspect. Komianos had professional ties to Gaka, used a secondary office for seminars, and was scheduled to meet Mazonakis following his medical procedure on the day of his death. Komianos declined to publicly disclose his testimony after spending over two hours answering questions from the investigator.
