Smooth Traffic Flow on Third Day in Schengen Area: No Congestion or Delays – Bulgarian Transport Police Reports

Bulgarian transport police have reported smooth traffic flow in the Schengen area for the past three days, with no significant congestion or delays. “We should celebrate this and look at it positively,” said Yordan Arabadjiev, executive director of the Union of International Transport Carriers, in an interview with Bulgaria Morning.

Arabadjiev expressed relief that drivers and carriers, who previously faced wait times of up to 20 hours or even days, are now experiencing unhindered transit. He acknowledged that while current traffic conditions are not optimal, the initial days have shown promising results.

Arabadjiev emphasized the importance of a swift and efficient transportation system, stating, "When transport is not fast, it loses its appeal."

In a related news piece, ‘Driverless Vehicles on Bulgarian Roads?: Nikolai Rashkov Says Technology Will Penetrate Quickly’, it is reported that the introduction of autonomous vehicles could significantly reduce business losses from delays and penalties, benefiting both drivers and consumers.

However, Arabadjiev highlighted the need for adequate infrastructure to support smooth traffic flow. "Physical payment of tolls remains the only manual process. The key is to prevent traffic congestion. We won’t be able to inspect all 1300 trucks at the border within 24 hours. Improving infrastructure is one of our main challenges," he said.

Arabadjiev also commented on the scarcity of drivers in the industry, with long wait times at borders being a key reason for many drivers leaving the profession.

Infrastructure Investment Needed for Long-term Growth

Arabadjiev stressed the need for:

  • Immediate road repairs, particularly for the Mizia-Botevgrad road, which is currently unusable and causing significant damage to the entire industry.
  • Long-term investment in better roads using the funds collected from motorway tolls and freight transport.
  • Attraction of foreign workers and restoration of Category C driver training in vocational schools to bridge the industry’s labor shortage.

Arabadjiev’s insights provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of transportation in the Schengen area, highlighting the importance of continued investment in infrastructure and human resources to ensure future growth and efficiency.
