Netherlands Man, 20, Arrested at Dominican Republic Airport with 5 Kg of Cocaine in Luggage

A 20-year-old Dutch man was arrested on Friday at Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic after authorities found nearly 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of cocaine in his luggage.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, was returning to the Netherlands when he was stopped for a random security check. Τουгіτι atraighters detected packages hidden in his suitcase, which later tested positive for cocaine with a street value of approximately €1.3 million ($1.5 million).

"The suspect was indications we conduct a more thorough examination of his luggage," said a spokesman for the Dominican Republic’s Customs and Immigration Agency. "We have zero tolerance for drug trafficking and will continue to work diligently to keep our country safe from this scourge."

The Dutch man was taken into custody and will face charges in the Dominican Republic for drug trafficking. The Netherlands Embassy in Santo Domingo has been notified and is providing consular assistance.

This is the latest in a series of arrests involving Dutch nationals caught trying to smuggle narcotics through Dominican airports. Authorities have stepped up scrutiny of flights to and from high-risk countries, resulting in a rise in drug-related apprehensions.

Officials warn passengers to exercise caution when accepting packages or items from strangers, as some may contain illicit substances. Unsuspecting travelers could face severe penalties, including long prison sentences, if caught transporting drugs.
