New Logo for Urk Municipality Sparks Mixed Reactions; Petition Launched
The newly unveiled logo of Urk municipality has sparked a mix of opinions among its residents, with some appreciating its simplicity while others criticize its lack of distinctiveness. The controversial logo, a simple ‘U’ encapsulated within the outlines of the municipal coat of arms, has even prompted a petition against its use.
"There’s nothing to it," a resident of the fishing village of Urk expressed on Omroep Flevoland. "It’s akin to Unox or Unilever; I don’t associate it with Urk." Another resident echoed the sentiment, labeling the logo "valueless" and likening it to a joke.
Maarten Post, another Urker, was so taken aback by the new logo that he initially thought it was a prank. He believes the logo fosters "dissociation" and has even initiated a petition calling for the reinstatement of the traditional municipal coat of arms as the logo. As of press time, the petition has amassed over 650 signatures.
Ironically, the municipality had ordered a simple, versatile logo from a design agency for €500, citing the need to replace the old logo—the outlines of the former island and a dried cod—which was considered complicated and limited in its applicability.
Despite the backlash, some residents have supported the new logo. "It’s easy to understand, and I don’t see why it needs to be overly intricate," commented one resident while shopping in the town center.
The municipality has deactivated the option to comment on Facebook and Instagram due to the sheer volume of criticism. As of now, they have yet to address the public discontent surrounding the new logo.
