SYDNEY—In a narrow escape that left them grateful and shaken, three Dutch friends managed to avoid a watery fate after their kayak capsized in rough seas off the coast of Australia.

The trio, all experienced kayakers, were enjoying a holiday in Queensland when they found themselves in a seemingly hopeless situation. As strong waves and currents battered their small boat, it quickly filled with water, forcing them into the treacherous surf.

"I’ve never been so scared in my life," recalls one of the men, Joost van den Berg. "The waves were huge, and the current was so strong. We thought we might not make it back to shore."

The friends fought against the elements, paddling and swimming desperately to keep their heads above water. After what felt like an eternity, they finally reached the safety of the beach, exhausted and relieved.

"We were extremely lucky," says van den Berg. "We’d prepared for a fun day on the water, not for a fight for our lives."

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of Australia’s coastline. Despite their ordeal, the friends say they won’t let the experience deter them from enjoying water activities in the future.

"We’re experienced kayakers, but this was a brutal reminder that you can never let your guard down," says van den Berg. "We’ll be more careful next time, that’s for sure."

Local authorities urge all water users to be vigilant and prepared, especially in areas known for strong currents and rough seas. "Always check the weather conditions before you head out, and never underestimate the power of the ocean," says a spokesperson for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

While the Dutch friends are counting their blessings, they’re also using their harrowing experience as a learning opportunity for others. "We were lucky, but not everyone is," says van den Berg. "Let our story serve as a warning to always be safe and respect the water."
