Title: Public Outpouring of Support for Stray Dog Linked to Missing teenage Boy with Down Syndrome
In a heartwarming display of community support, many have offered to temporarily rehome a stray dog tied to the disappearance of 13-year-old Nikolai, a boy with Down syndrome from the Bulgarian village of Konaare. The boy went missing on December 17 and has remained unaccounted for since.
The dog, believed to be owned by Nikolai’s mother, was found in the village last Sunday in a distressing state, visibly underfed. After being examined by veterinarians, its prospects for survival were deemed grim.
However, the second husband of Nikolai’s mother, Dimitar Yanukov, the boy’s stepfather, has expressed his refusal to let the dog go. "I’ve looked after this dog for over a year now. I can’t just give it away, especially now, when it’s needed most," he told BTV.
Despite his mother’s wishes to not see the dog, Dimitar is determined to keep it, "I’ve already paid for its vaccination and chipping. It’s already under my care, and I won’t abandon it now."
Tatyana Baycheva, from the "New Chance for Cast-off Angels" organization in Kazanlak, has taken the dog in for temporary care and medical treatment. She urges everyone to remain understanding, stating that the dog’s fate will be determined by the ongoing investigation and legal procedures.
The search for Nikolai continues, with military personnel now joining the efforts. Interior Minister Aatanas Ilkov assures the public that the investigation will continue, albeit with a scaled-back team starting tomorrow.
In a turning point, public outrage has led to many offers to temporarily foster the dog, highlighting the Bulgarian community’s compassion and unity in the face of adversity. As the search for Nikolai progresses, the dog’s fate remains intertwined with the hope for the boy’s safe return.
