Safety First: Handling Fireworks and Other Pyrotechnics this Holiday Season

In an urgent call via social media, former Nova TV reporter and current meteorologist, Nikolay Vasilkovski, and Dr. Baharam Firouzi, the surgeon who restored his hand’s functionality following a severe pyrotechnics accident, urge everyone to prioritize safety when handling fireworks and other pyrotechnics this holiday season.

Several years ago, Vasilkovski, then a news reporter, suffered a devastating hand injury after misusing pyrotechnics under the influence of alcohol. Dr. Firouzi, the orthopedic trauma specialist who performed Vasilkovski’s reconstructive surgery, warns that such severe injuries can also affect the face, and in some cases, even medical professionals may be powerless to prevent life-altering damage.

"Alcohol consumption often impairs our judgment and slows down our reactions, making fireworks handling particularly perilous," Dr. Firouzi cautioned. He emphasized the importance of heightened caution when dealing with items like fireworks, batteries, sparklers, and other similar products, as they can cause immense harm if not handled correctly.

Vasilkovski, reflecting on his experience, shared, "After the accident, I’ve been extremely cautious around pyrotechnics."

Dr. Firouzi also stressed the need for vigilance around children, reminding everyone that seemingly safe items like ‘safe and sane’ fireworks—like sparklers—can pose risks if not properly supervised. "Even a sparkler can cause serious harm if mishandled," he warned.

As you celebrate this season, let’s keep these crucial safety tips in mind and ensure that our festivities remain joyous and incident-free.
