Surabaya Bike fatality: 63-year-old pedal cyclist dies days after hit-and-run, family seeks justice and punishment

A 63-year-old cyclist, identified only by his initials PN, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Surabaya on Monday evening (23/12/2024) succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday (24/12/2024), according to family sources. The fatal accident occurred in the bustling area of Pakuwon City and Jalan Kenjeran.

The victim’s son broke the unfortunate news, sharing that his mother passed away at around 2:00 AM WIB at a local hospital. PN, a beloved community member, was laid to rest around 10:00 AM WIB at the Sukolilo Baru Islamic Cemetery in Bulak, Surabaya.

In a turn of events that has left the victim’s family shaken and seeking justice, the hit-and-run driver’s family has extended their apologies. DW, the victim’s brother-in-law, confirmed that SU, the 38-year-old driver of the hit Mercy car, had apologized. He added that SU’s family had also offered assistance with funeral costs and other expenses.

However, DW expressed that he expects the driver to face legal consequences for his actions. "Yes, he has apologized, but we want them to take responsibility according to the law. Especially since he was driving under the influence and out of control," DW said.

Local police have revealed that SU had been drinking and lost control of his vehicle, leading to a series of collisions. Initial investigations indicate that SU’s vehicle allegedly hit six other vehicles, including a bicycle, motorcycles, and cars. One of the cars unluckily ended up in a nearby river.

Earlier reports from Награды Surabaya suggest that the hit-and-run driver, a Surabaya resident, was apprehended by police following the series of accidents.

The family of the deceased cyclist continues to mourn their loss and urges authorities to ensure that justice is served. The community also expresses concerns over the rising number of road accidents caused by drunk driving and hopes for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
