Stormy Weather Forces Fjell Road Closures: Hardangervidda and Haukelifjell Affected

Several Norwegian mountainous regions are experiencing traffic disruptions and closures due to severe weather, with Hardangervidda and Haukelifjell being the most affected. Uvær, or rough weather, has led to road closures and the implementation of convoy traffic systems on several fjellovergangar (mountain passes).

Hardangervidda Stretches and Haukelifjell Blockaded

Hardangervidda, Norway’s largest mountain plateau, has closed roads along its length. The Rv7 road is shut down, which is a major artery connecting Upper Telemark to Hordaland and Bergen. This closure is a significant blow to traveling in and out of these regions, particularly for locals and tourists alike.

The situation is no better on the Haukelifjell mountain range, where the Rv13 road is closed and a kolonnekjøring (conveyor traffic) system is in place. This system involves escorted convoys of vehicles traveling through the affected areas, markedly slowing down travel times.

Other Affected Mountain Passes

In addition to Hardangervidda and Haukelifjell, other mountain passes have also been impacted, including those in Hemsedal and Hol. These closures affect multiple transport corridors, including parts of the E16 highway.

Local authorities advise extreme caution for anyone traveling in the regions, with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration continually updating its road status pages to keep travelers informed.

One worried local stated, "I usually take this route to work. Today, I had to find an alternative path, adding extra time to my commute. I hope the roads reopen soon." Their sentiment is shared by many, with the current situation highlighting the unpredictable nature of winter travel in Norway.
