In a robust response to Democratic critics, President-elect Donald Trump has affirmed that tech billionaire Elon Musk will not be taking over the Oval Office. Speaking at a forum hosted by the ultraconservative group Turning Point in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump addressed the escalating concerns about Musk’s influence over his administration.
"Let’s set the record straight," Trump declared, "The new Democrats’ mantra is that I’ve ‘ceded the presidency to Elon Musk.’ That’s just not happening." The incoming president praised Musk’s revolutionary work with SpaceX but clarified that the South African-born entrepreneur is barred from the presidency by the U.S. Constitution.
"No, he’s not assuming the presidency, and that’s a guarantee," Trump stated, drawing laughter from the crowd. "And you know why I’m safe? Because he wasn’t born here."
Critics, primarily from the Democratic Party, have been vocal about Musk’s growing sway over the Trump administration. They argue that Musk has become a sort of ‘shadow president,’ particularly since he led the charge to scuttle a budget deal between Democrats and Republicans last week.
Congress, however, averted a government shutdown with a last-minute budget extension Saturday, although it didn’t include Musk’s and Trump’s demand to rescind the debt ceiling.
During Trump’s victorious presidential campaign, Musk openly endorsed him on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Since Trump’s win, Musk has become a frequent visitor at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and has been entrusted with reducing bureaucracy in the incoming administration.
