8 minuten en 46 seconden; zo lang hield een politieagent George Floyd in zijn greep met een nekklem. Een wurggreep die fataal werd. De dood van de zwarte Amerikaan ontketende een golf van protest. Vandaag is het precies vijf jaar geleden dat hij werd vermoord.
De schokkende beelden van zijn arrestatie veroorzaakten verontwaardiging en woede. Zijn laatste woorden “I can’t breathe” werden het symbool van een massale protestbeweging tegen politiegeweld en racisme.
Uitgerekend in deze beladen week maakt de regering-Trump een einde aan belangrijke hervormingen die na de dood van de 46-jarige zwarte Amerikaan zijn ingevoerd bij lokale politieafdelingen. President Trump wil namelijk af van alles waar Black Lives Matter voor staat.
