A 180-Degree Turn: Trump’s Praise for Meta After Years of Criticism
Article Body:
In a surprising U-turn, former U.S. President Donald Trump has heaped praise on Meta Platforms Inc., the company behind social media giants Facebook and Instagram. This newfound admiration comes after Meta disabled its fact-checking program across all its platforms, a move that Trump has warmly received.
Trump’s endorsement marks a sharp contrast to his previous stance towards Meta. In the past, he had publicly lambasted the company and even threatened to jail its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, if elected as President. The roots of Trump’s animosity can be traced back to when Meta blocked his access to Facebook and Instagram following the 2020 U.S. Capitol insurrection.
"Meta’s presentation has been very good. They’ve come a long way," Trump commended, as reported by Fox News on January 9, 2025.
Meta’s fact-checking system was introduced in the aftermath of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Recently, the company announced it would be replacing this feature with a new model called ‘Community Notes,’ akin to Twitter’s birdwatch.
In addition to scrapping fact-checks, Meta has also announced plans to revise its content moderation policies. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s head of global policy, stated that the company aims to relax its more stringent rules, particularly around sensitive topics such as immigration and gender issues.
"Our aim is to foster free and open conversations on our platforms without censorship," Kaplan explained.
While Meta acknowledges its previous fact-checking system had flaws, leading to the removal of innocent posts, Kaplan clarified that the company’s intention was not to censor but to uphold free speech. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also echoed this sentiment, vowing to simplify Meta’s policies and restore free expression.
