Horrific New Year’s Welcome: Two Men Found Hanged in Chihuahua‘s Guadalupe y Calvo
quet|2025-01-02
TheNewYear, celebrated by millions worldwide, brought Morris than just joy and hope in the Mexican municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua. The bodies of two men were discovered hanging from the entrance’s arch, adorned with festive lights and decors, on the night of January 1, 2025.
Passersby alerted authorities after spotting the victims, whose identities remain unknown, during the first hours of the New Year. A quick and intense police mobilization ensued, with local and state forces cordoning off the scene. The Fiscalía coordinated the removal and transport of the bodies to the Servicio Médico Forense (Semefo) for autopsies and identification.
A message attributed to organized crime groups was found near the victims, suggesting a "cleaning" operation and warning of further violence. "Happy New Year," it sarcastically concluded.
Tensions have escalated in the region over the past few weeks, with multiple clashes reported between members of Los Salgueiro (a Sinaloa Cartel cell) and La Línea (Juárez Cartel’s armed wing).
This macabre discovery follows another incident at the same location on December 29, when the body of a young man was found hanging from the arch. After investigations, authorities identified him as Ángel "B," a 19-year-old resident of Baborigame. A leaked video appears to show Ángel identifying Ildefonso Arellanes, alias ‘Poncho Arellanes,’ as the leader of a La Línea-affiliated group called Los Arellanes. Arellanes is accused of providing drones and bomb-making materials. The rivalry between the two groups escalated in 2020 following a plane crash that killed six of Arellanes’ relatives, allegedly at the hands of Sinaloa Cartel dissidents.
The brutal start to the New Year in Guadalupe y Calvo serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing violence and power struggles plaguing Mexico‘s northern states. As the investigation into the latest incident continues, authorities are left to confront the chilling reality that, for some, the New Year brought nothing but despair.
