U.S. Embassies Worldwide to Close in Observance of President Carter’s State Funeral

All U.S. federal offices, including consular services, will be closed worldwide on Thursday, January 9, following an executive order from the U.S. government. This measure is taken to commemorate the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy announced, "Due to the executive order closing the federal government in observance of the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, all U.S. government offices in Santo Domingo, including those providing consular services, will be closed on January 9."

Honorary services will take place in Washington DC, 11 days before the inauguration of the president-elect. President Biden has ordered that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings and grounds.

President Carter, the 39th U.S. president, was in home hospice care, having received treatment for an aggressive form of skin cancer, melanoma, which had spread to his liver and brain.
