Lead Paragraph: As the holiday season approaches, health authorities in the United States have issued warnings about an increase in the spread of a particular disease. This comes after detection of the virus in wastewater in several states.
Body:
-
At-Risk States: According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), states like New Mexico, Kansas, and New Hampshire have seen a significant increase in viral activity in their wastewater. Other states, such as Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Connecticut, are also at risk due to the proliferation of the virus.
-
Vaccination Drive: In response to this threat, the CDC is urging Americans, especially those in vulnerable groups, to get vaccinated again. The protection provided by initial doses wanes over time, and the CDC recommends vaccination for those who have not received any shots, as well as specific groups such as seniors, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems.
-
Recommended Vaccines: The CDC has approved three vaccines for use in the United States:
- Moderna: recommended for all ages 6 months and up.
- Pfizer-BioNTech: also recommended for all ages 6 months and up.
- Novavax: recommended for ages 12 and up.
-
Updated Vaccines: The CDC notes that these vaccines are designed to target the JN.1 linage of the Omicron variant and are updated to provide better protection against currently circulating strains.
