Ukraine Strikes Russian Fuel Base Servicing Strategic Bomber Base in Engels

Ukraine launched an attack on a fuel depot that services the military airport in the Russian city of Engels overnight, Ukrainian military sources told Reuters. The strike created significant logistical challenges for Russia’s strategic aviation and severely limited its ability to launch attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian targets, according to a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported numerous explosions and a large fire at the petrol plant "Crystal," which it said supplies fuel to the military airport "Engels-2," home to Russia’s strategic bomber fleet. The attack resulted in the deaths of two firefighters, with another injured, according to Saratov region governor Roman Busargin, citing Russia’s Tass news agency.

The strike in Engels, some 730 kilometers southeast of Moscow and hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border, comes after three Russian air force personnel were killed in December 2022 when a drone was shot down there, Reuters reported.
