Ukraine’s military operation in Kursk leads key events Russians consider significant

Operation in Kursk: Russia’s Most Newsworthy Event of 2024, According to Levada Center

In a recent poll conducted by the Levada Center, Russians were asked to name the most significant news stories of 2024. Topping the list was an event that shook the nation: the military operation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region.

This operation, initiated on August 6, saw Ukrainian troops briefly capture around 1,000 square kilometers of territory before a combined counterattack by Russian and North Korean forces recaptured some of the lost ground.

When asked about the most important news events of the year, 31% of respondents mentioned "elections" — likely referring to both the Russian presidential election and the U.S. presidential election, which both took place in 2024. Another 31% cited the tragedy at Moscow’s "Crocus City Hall," while 30% recalled the attempted missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, dubbed "Oreshin" by Russian media.

Economic issues also resonated with Russians, with 21% mentioning the rise in interest rates, inflation, and utility tariffs, as well as the surge in the U.S. dollar’s value. A significant proportion (18%) also recalled the drone attacks on Russian territory.

These insights offer a fascinating perspective on what captures the attention and concerns the Russian public most. Despite the obvious geopolitical context, the poll underscores the fact that domestic and economic issues remain deeply relevant to ordinary citizens.
