Ukraine‘s NATO Aspirations and Security: Zelensky‘s Stance
President Volodymyr Zelensky has speaking openly about Ukraine’s pursuit of NATO membership and its implications for the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a recent address, Zelensky addressed the international community, stating, "We were told that Patriot systems could only be in NATO countries. Either we’re already in NATO, or let’s not rush to conclusions."
Recalling the past, Zelensky noted that arguments similar to those around the Patriot system have also been made about other NATO-standard weapons and systems. He underscored the urgency of ensuring that Ukraine secures robust security guarantees to deter further Russian aggression. "We need to work towards providing our people with security guarantees that can stop Putin," he asserted.
Zelensky explicitly tied the Russian invasion to Ukraine’s non-aligned status, stating that the lack of concrete security guarantees from the international community has emboldened Russia. He pointed out that a united stance from the U.S. and its European allies on Ukraine’s NATO aspirations has been missing. "The U.S., along with Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia, were against Ukraine’s NATO membership. They didn’t see us there," Zelensky said, bluntly addressing the countries’ past rôles.
Zelensky believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin calculated that no one would intervene, given Ukraine’s lack of solid security guarantees. "He thought he could destroy us. But the Ukrainian army is an army of strong people. Our nation has amazed the world," Zelensky remarked, highlighting Ukrainian resilience and strength.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine now rightfully demands serious security guarantees, having discussions with three U.S. Presidents—Trump and Biden–on this topic. He also clarified that until Ukraine receives these guarantees, the return of Ukrainian refugees to Europe would be impractical and irresponsible. "It’s hard to talk about Ukrainians returning to Europe without supporting Ukraine’s security guarantees," Zelensky stated, foreshadowing his upcoming dialogue with U.S. President Biden on this matter.
