Ukrainians: Prepare for These Unpopular Government Decisions, Says Portnikov

Ukraine Braces for Unpopular Decisions in 2024: Vitaliy Portnikov

Ukrainian political analyst Vitaliy Portnikov believes that Ukraine must make unpopular decisions during the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian political analyst and journalist Vitaliy Portnikov has warned that navigating the war’s challenges will necessitate taking difficult and unpopular decisions in 2024. Speaking to Radio SvobodaUkraina, Portnikov emphasized that while these decisions are a recurring topic of discussion, the specifics remain uncertain.

" Nous avons besoin d’une mobilisation plus efficace ", declared Portnikov, noting that the inefficiencies in the current mobilization process have become evident. He made it clear that this isn’t about simply lowering the draft age, but rather about improving how the mobilization is conducted. Cautioning that merely reducing the age could lead to unforeseen complications, Portnikov pointed out that a significant number of 18 to 25-year-olds are students or otherwise exempt due to their occupations.

The prominent author also signaled that 2024 may bring further unpopular economic decisions. "We’re not going to get by with just raising taxes," Portnikov underscored, referencing Ukraine’s ongoing reliance on Western aid. As assistance from abroad diminishes, so too will the nation’s capacity to support its citizens.

In the past, Portnikov has proposed daring solutions to the ongoing crisis. Notably, he once suggested that President Putin should target a different major city with the "O Normandia" missile, instead of Kyiv, saying, "That’s also a good idea." Additionally, he outlined a hypothetical scenario in which a single order from Putin could trigger global catastrophe without resorting to nuclear weapons.

As the conflict continues, Portnikov’s insights serve as a stark reminder that steering Ukraine through these tumultuous times will invariably demand tough choices from its leadership and citizens alike.
