Headline: Fighting Disease and Promoting Health: UNIVET Bantara Students Lead Community Initiatives in Sukoharjo
In the heart of Sukoharjo, Indonesia, students from the Kesmas branch of UNIVET’s Public Health and Nutrition (PBL) program are making waves through community-driven initiatives aimed at combating diseases, fostering healthy environments, and enhancing public awareness. Their dedication and innovative approaches are transforming lives and instilling a spirit of health and sustainability in the local communities.
In the village of Puron, Bulu, the students collaborated with local NGOs and district health offices to educate the community about malaria prevention. Through engaging socialization events and distributing informative leaflets, they enlightened residents about the dangers of malaria, how to recognize symptoms, and most importantly, how to prevent it. The campaign, titled ‘Bersama 획Purwon Menghindari Malaria’ (Together with Puron to Avoid Malaria), has significantly boosted local awareness and commitment to malaria prevention.
Combating Dengue Fever and Zika Virus
Building on their malaria prevention success, the students moved on to tackle dengue fever and the Zika virus in the same district. Partnering with the Local Task Force for Dengue Fever and Zika Virus Prevention, they organized a massive workday to eliminate potential breeding grounds for the ‘Aedes’ mosquito that transmits these diseases. In Malangan village, residents, students, and local authorities united to clean up potential mosquito habitats, distribute larvicide, and promote personal hygiene practices to thwart the spread of dengue and Zika.
Mangrove Planting for a Healthier Environment
Recognizing the critical role of environmental health in disease prevention, the students participated in a groundbreaking mangrove reforestation project in the coastal village of Tegalmulyo. Working alongside local families, they planted thousands of mangrove saplings, creating a natural barrier against tidal surges and contributing to a healthier coastal environment. This initiative, ‘Perkasa Tegalmulyo’ (Empowering Tegalmulyo), aims to protect vulnerable communities from storms and rising sea levels, all while nurturing vital ecosystems for local flora and fauna.
Innovative Anti-Mosquito Spray
To further combat mosquito-borne diseases, the enterprising students developed a revolutionary anti-mosquito spray using native serai (lemongrass) plants. After successful testing and refinement, the team demonstrated how to make and use the spray during a community event in Puron. The event also featured a captivating theatrical performance educating locals about the importance of adopting this eco-friendly, natural deterrent.
Training and Capacity Building
In Malangan, the students went a step further by conducting a two-day training session for local authorities and community leaders on vector control. Through hands-on workshops and interactive discussions, they taught participants how to make the serai-based anti-mosquito spray and emphasized the importance of ongoing community engagement and education in combating mosquito-borne diseases.
The UNIVET Bantara students’ initiatives have not only empowered local communities but also sparked a genuine passion for public health and community service among their peers. Their work serves as a shining example of how determined, creative individuals can harness the power of community engagement to promote health, prevent diseases, and cultivate sustainable futures.
