Hidden Camera Reveals Deer Culling on Dutch Farm; Farmer Reacts
A clandestine camera has exposed the culling of deer on a Dutch farm, sparking outrage and a reaction from the farmer involved. The footage, obtained by Dutch news outlet BN DeStem, shows hunters shooting deer on the property, raising questions about the farm’s practices and the legality of the cull.
The farm, located in the southern Netherlands, had previously been the subject of complaints from local residents about deer damaging their property and gardens. However, the use of hidden cameras to record the culling has drawn strong criticism.
"We were not expecting to find this," said a spokesperson for the animal welfare organization that set up the cameras. "While we understand the farmer’s frustration, there are legal and ethical ways to deal with this issue."
The farmer, who wished to remain anonymous, defended the culling: "These deer are causing significant damage to my land and crops. I have permission from the local authorities to control their numbers, and this is the most effective way to do it."
Video footage, obtained exclusively by BN DeStem, shows hunters arriving at the farm under the cover of darkness, setting up spotlights, and shooting deer as they approach. The animals were then collected and removed from the scene.
"I understand that people might have their reservations about this method," the farmer added, "but I assure you, it’s the most humane way to control the deer population here."
However, animal welfare advocates argue that the use of spotlights and the shooting of deer at night could cause unnecessary suffering to the animals.
"Shooting deer at night is not a best practice," said a veterinarian who has reviewed the footage. "The stress and anxiety caused by the spotlights, combined with the potential for injuries from poorly placed shots, makes this a questionable practice."
Authorities are investigating the incident, and the farm owner could face charges if the culling is found to violate local regulations. The farmer maintains that he has acted within his rights and that the culling is necessary to protect his property.
The use of hidden cameras to uncover such practices has gained traction in the Netherlands, with several investigations revealing issues such as animal welfare concerns and environmental degradation.
