Automotive Financing Trends in Mexico by 2025
As the automotive industry evolves, financing options have become critical in shaping consumer decisions. The 2025 Report on Financing and State Distributors by the Association of Mexican Automobile Distributors (AMDA)—in collaboration with JATO and Urban Science—reveals key insights into how vehicle financing is transforming in Mexico.
High Demand for Vehicle Financing
In the first quarter of 2025, vehicle financing for new car purchases through dealers (“menudeo”) reached 72.3%. This indicates a strong market reliance on credit to broaden ownership among Mexican households. However, this figure drops to 61.7% when fleet purchases (typically paid in cash) are factored in.
Segment-Specific Financing Preferences
Consumer behavior varies across different vehicle segments. Subcompact cars lead the way with a finance usage rate of 66.8%, followed by multifunctional and compact vehicles at 64.2% and 62.6% respectively. This suggests a shift towards more practical vehicle choices when financed. Conversely, luxury and sports cars see lower financing rates at 44.7% and 50.4%.
Preferred Financing Terms by Vehicle Type
When it comes to financing terms, consumers prefer a 60-month period to pay for subcompact, compact, multifunctional, pick-ups, and sports cars. The luxury vehicle segment, on the other hand, leans towards shorter 36-month terms, reflecting different financial priorities and income levels.
State-Wise Financial Opportunities
The state-level analysis reveals interesting variations in financing uptake. Tamaulipas, for example, tops the list with a strong 82.6% of new car buyers using finance, followed closely by Sinaloa and Quintana Roo. Baja California Norte and Puebla also show significant financing participation.
Opportunity for Growth
The Opportunity Financing Index suggests a potential financing gap of 15,491 new vehicles, equivalent to 9,036 million pesos, primarily in the multifunctional vehicle segment centered around Mexico City. This implies significant untapped financial services potential in certain regions.
