UNSW Sydney Secures $3.5 Million NHMRC Funding
The three successful projects received a combined total of $3,503,039 in funding. Led by researchers across the faculties of Medicine & Health, Arts, Design & Architecture and Science, the initiatives aim to translate academic findings into practical changes in healthcare delivery, organisation, funding, and access.
UNSW Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise Professor Bronwyn Fox stated that the grants reflect the institution’s focus on collaborative research. Partnerships are essential to ensuring research delivers meaningful benefits for communities,
Prof. Fox said, noting that close work with services at the centre of complex health issues helps translate evidence into practical care improvements.
Targeting Congenital Syphilis, HIV, and Refugee Mental Health
The funded projects address three distinct areas of public health need. Researchers will investigate ways to improve health services for people affected by congenital syphilis, enhance HIV prevention strategies, and address mental health challenges experienced by refugees.
The Partnership Projects scheme specifically supports research collaborations designed to answer targeted health questions. By working alongside community organisations, health departments, and service providers, the UNSW teams intend to ensure their findings directly inform health policy and clinical practice across Australia.
NHMRC Acting CEO Prue Torrance noted the broader intent behind the grants. NHMRC-funded researchers are strongly encouraged to collaborate with partners whose decisions and actions shape health services, health policy and the delivery of care,
Torrance said, adding that the projects possess the potential to ultimately improve health outcomes for all Australians.
