Title: The Enigma of Christmas: Is it ‘Коледа’ or ‘Рождество Христово’? – A Bulgarian Historian’s Perspective
In the wake of the festive season, the age-old question of what the holiday is really called, ‘Коледа’ or ‘Рождество Христovo,’ is once again stirring curiosity. Professor Valeria Fol, an expert on Thracian heritage and culture, delved into this topic and shared her insights in a live interview on "Nova News."
"’Коледа’ is the Bulgarian pronunciation," Professor Fol explained. "The term ‘Рождество Христово’ gained prominence after the 4th century when a monk named Dionisius chose the dates of ‘Коледа’ for Christmas to resolve the debate about Jesus’ birthdate. It’s important to note that Dionisius was from the Скифия region, where the Sun was revered as a god. In Bulgarian folklore, we say, ‘Замъчила се Божията Майка от Игнажден до Коледа,’ and images of Christ radiant with sun rays have been found in Bulgarian lands."
The professor also reminded viewers that the Bulgarian state was founded on ancient Byzantine territory. "The Byzantine calendar, inherited from Rome, referred to the first day of each month as ‘Kalendar.’ In Bulgaria, we retained this concept, but adapted it to our local traditions. For us, the New Year begins at the winter solstice, ‘Игнажден,’ a time when sun rays are scarce, and darkness prevails. This is also when we perform the ‘полазник’ ritual – the first person to enter the house determines the family’s fortune for the year."
Professor Fol clarified that the ‘Коледа’ period begins with the solstice, not January 1st. "The first day is Malka Koleda, and the second, Velika Koleda, symbolizing the rebirth of the young Sun God," she added.
