Headline: Bolivia Urges Vulnerable Populations to Vaccinate Against COVID-19 as 500K Doses Arrive Amid Ómicron Concerns

The Bolivian government has called upon vulnerable populations to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as part of its ongoing efforts to combat the pandemic. The country is set to receive over 500,000 doses of the vaccine in the next ten days, facilitated through the COVAX mechanism. These vaccines have been updated to tackle the severe complications associated with the Ómicron variant.

Minister of Health, Maria Renée Castro, emphasized the importance of vaccination for individuals aged 60 and above, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and those with pre-existing conditions. "The vaccines brought to our country by President Lucho Arce are always the best, the safest, and the most up-to-date," she affirmed in an interview with BTV.

Bolivia has recorded 457 COVID-19 cases in the first five days of 2025, with the majority concentrated in the Santa Cruz department, which reported 369 cases. Regrettably, the department also witnessed the COVID-19-related death of an unvaccinated individual over the age of 80 with underlying health conditions.

Castro underscored the necessity of annual vaccination, pointing out that COVID-19 has become an endemic virus in Bolivia, similar to the flu and other respiratory viruses. The incoming vaccine doses will help protect the population ahead of the upcoming winter season. Both the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines are part of the Regular Vaccination Scheme and require only a single annual dose.

The Health Minister reminded the public to consult healthcare facilities if they exhibit any symptoms and to maintain preventative measures, such as handwashing, using 70% alcohol, maintaining physical distance, and wearing masks when necessary.

With this fresh batch of vaccines, Bolivia solidifies its commitment to its most vulnerable populations, ensuring that they have access to the protection they need to weather the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
