UnMasking the Metaneumovirus: What the World Needs to Know About the China Outbreak
Article:
In an interview with #LA17, Argentina’s Subsecretary of Health and ex-Health Minister, Fabián Puratich, clarified that the metaneumovirus, responsible for the recent outbreak in China, "is not a new virus." Known for some time, this virus affects the respiratory tract. "What’s happening in China is due to the combination of this virus and the increase in COVID cases," Puratich explained.
Hospitals in China are facing a complex situation due to overcrowding. Puratich highlighted that the current scenario differs from the initial pandemic because we now have vaccines and preventive measures. "We’ve forgotten about preventive measures," he lamented. Lack of habits such as handwashing and using alcohol gel facilitates the spread of respiratory viruses.
In the Northern Hemisphere, winter has increased viral circulation. Puratich reminded us that COVID is a respiratory virus that has been with us since its appearance. "We must get vaccinated and maintain preventive measures," he emphasized.
The specialist recommended annual vaccination against COVID, similar to the flu. "It’s important to get vaccinated before the cold arrives," he indicated. In Argentina, March or April are ideal months for receiving the annual dose.
The virus primarily affects young children. "Babies are the most vulnerable," Puratich warned. He also stressed the importance of the vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for pregnant women. "This vaccine reduces respiratory infections in newborns," he asserted.
Thanks to this strategy, in 2023, there was a decrease in hospitalizations due to respiratory diseases in neonatology. Puratich insisted on the need to continue with these vaccination campaigns.
Puraticth criticized the austerity measures in national healthcare. "The elimination of key organisms affects the response to epidemiological outbreaks," he denounced. The Epidemiology Department and other essential areas were disbanded.
The ex-minister warned that "cuts generate a transfer to the private sector" and limit the public sector’s capacity. He added that this could have grave consequences in the future.
In case of possible health emergencies, Puratich warned that provinces would be on their own. "Without national support, facing a pandemic would be almost impossible," he emphasized.
Recalling his role as Minister during the pandemic, Puratich admitted the emotional impact. "I decided over life and death," he confessed. The province registered over 1700 fatalities, leaving deep marks. "The weight of the pandemic is a difficult burden to overcome," he recognized, but assured working daily to process the experience and move forward.
He praised the responsibility of local media during the pandemic. "Media in Chubut were solidary and responsible," he affirmed. Their role helped transmit calm and prevent panic. However, he criticized some national media outlets for generating confusion and fear.
In conclusion, Puratich emphasized the importance of maintaining vaccination and preventive measures. "We can avoid the worst if we act in time," he concluded.
