As the holiday season approaches, Ukrainians are curious about the winter weather that awaits them. According to Natalia Ptyha of Ukргидрометцентр, here’s what’s in store for the coming months.
Christmas and New Year: Mild or Cold?
With Christmas just around the corner, there’s a expectation of classic winter weather — snow-filled streets, icy winds, and frosty temperatures. But what does the forecast hold?
Ptyha reveals that Ukraine is currently experiencing unseasonably warm weather. "Temperatures are 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal in many areas," she says. While this mild spell might continue, holiday celebrations could see a taste of winter.
On Christmas day, some western regions may experience light snow, while southern areas will likely see rain. The rest of the country can expect dry conditions. Temperatures will hover around freezing, hovering between -2°C and +3°C.
But don’t expect snowmen or snowball fights just yet. The impact of atmospheric fronts from the south will weaken after Christmas, making way for a field of high pressure over Europe.
In the coming days, the only significant weather event will be a brief period of snow in the Carpathian region on Boxing Day. Elsewhere, expect clear skies and temperatures ranging from -4°C to +2°C, with some southeastern regions enjoying highs of up to 7°C.
Winter Storms and Extreme Cold: Fiction or Reality?
While the current forecast doesn’t predict any snowstorms or extreme cold, Ukrainians shouldn’t assume that winter will be mild throughout. Ptyha emphasizes that the weather remains unpredictable.
"Snow cover is unlikely to form across most of Ukraine before the end of December," she says. "However, after 27 December, temperatures may drop slightly, especially at night."
Don’t expect any severe cold spells, though. Although temperatures may dip to -6°C or -8°C in some areas, widespread extreme cold is not forecast.
January 2025: What to Expect
Looking ahead to January 2025, Ptyha anticipates changes in atmospheric patterns. The first day of the year should be calm, but from 2 January onwards, unsettled weather may return, bringing rain or snow.
New Year’s Day itself should be tranquil, with no significant weather events expected. However, Ukrainians should prepare for typical winter weather in the coming weeks.
Ptyha reassures that despite the changes, January 2025 is not expected to bring any significant snowstorms or extreme cold.
