"What If We Buy Alaska?"

title: "Trump‘s ‘Buy Canada‘ Idea Sparked Ford’s Counteroffer: ‘How About We Buy Alaska and Minnesota?’

In an unprecedented exchange, President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st U.S. state has received an unexpected response from across the border. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has playfully suggested Canada could consider purchasing Alaska and Minnesota instead.

Trump, during a press conference this week, hinted at using "economic power" to absorb Canada into the U.S., citing military assistance and trade imbalances as underlying concerns. However, Ford quickly dismissed the idea, describing it as "absurd" in an interview with Anadolu Agency and Hindustan Times.

In response to Trump’s comment, Ford humorously offered a counter-proposal. "You know what, Mr. President, I’ve got a deal for you. What if we buy Alaska and throw in Minnesota and Minneapolis for good measure? But we both know that’s not going to happen," Ford quipped.

Minnesota, a U.S. state sharing a 885-kilometer border with Canada, and Minneapolis, one of its major cities, have been humorously included in Ford’s jest. The premier acknowledged Trump’s tendency towards provocative remarks but assured his commitment to protecting Ontario’s interests. Sharing a border with the U.S. and being home to the Canadian capital Ottawa, Ontario’s provincial government takes such discussions seriously.

While Ford acknowledged Trump’s remarks may be intended as a joke, he emphasized that under his watch, such an idea would never become a reality. "He likes to make comments like that, and he likes to joke around. I take him seriously. He might be joking, but under my watch, that won’t happen."

Trump’s controversial proposal and Ford’s lighthearted counteroffer have sparked a unique international exchange. As both leaders prepare to take office, their differing stances on such issues will continue to shape the bilateral relationship between their respective nations.
