Headline: VP Gibran Unaware of KPK’s Case against PDIP‘s Hasto Kristiyanto; Lawyer Considers Legal Steps

In a recent development in Indonesia, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has expressed his lack of involvement and knowledge regarding the recent corruption case involving Sekjen PDI Perjuangan (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto, which has been taken up by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Hasto was recently named a suspect in a case involving bribery and former PDIP legislative candidate, Harun Masiku. When questioned about this development, VP Gibran responded, "Why are you asking me? Ask KPK, it’s none of my business," after visiting the Yayasan Keluarga Allah in Solo, Jawa Tengah, on Christmas Day, as reported by Kompas.com.

Meanwhile, Hasto’s legal team is considering taking the case to the pre-trial stage following his classification as a suspect by the KPK. Alvon Kurnia Palma, Hasto’s lawyer, hinted at this possibility while discussing the topic ‘KPK Declares Hasto Kristiyanto a Suspect in Harun Masiku Bribery Case’ on Sapa Indonesia Pagi Kompas TV.

The KPK announced Hasto’s status as a suspect in the bribery case of Commissioners of the General Election Commission (KPU) period 2017-2022, Wahyu Setiawan, on Tuesday, December 24. Hasto is now a suspect alongside Harun Masiku, who remains at large.

KPK based its decision on several laws, including the Hukum Acara Pidana Law No. 8 of 1981, the Corruption Eradication Law No. 31 of 1999 (as amended by Law No. 20 of 2001), and the Corruption Eradication Commission Law No. 30 of 2002 (as amended several times, lastly by Law No. 19 of 2019).

The development follows KPK’s investigation report LPP-24/DIK 02.01/22/12/2024 dated December 18, 2024, and the Letter of Authority for Investigation No. Sprin Dik/ 153/DIK.00/01/12/2024, dated December 23, 2024. According to KPK, Hasto was named a suspect for offering gifts or promises to Wahyu Setiawan in his capacity as a member of the KPU.

As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the upcoming legal process and how it might impact the political landscape in Indonesia.
