Microsoft will transition its Windows settings backup tool to a "default-on" state for enterprise devices joined to Microsoft Entra or Entra hybrid, starting with the release of Windows 11 version 26H2.
How the Windows Backup Transition Works
The transition shifts the “Windows settings backup” policy from a disabled state to an enabled state for qualifying enterprise devices. This change applies specifically to organizations running Windows 11 26H2 that have not previously configured a custom backup policy. If an administrator has already explicitly enabled or disabled backup settings, the system will respect that existing configuration, ensuring no disruption to established IT workflows.
Scope and Regional Limitations
Not all enterprise environments will see this automatic shift. Microsoft specifies that the default-on behavior is limited to devices outside of the European Union, where the Digital Markets Act (DMA) imposes different regulatory requirements. Additionally, the feature will not activate by default for devices operating within sovereign or restricted cloud environments. The restore functionality remains separate; it will not be enabled by default, requiring intentional configuration by IT administrators to initiate data recovery on new or reimaged devices.
Deployment Timeline for Organizations
Organizations can begin testing the default-on behavior in the Windows Insider Program’s “Experimental” channel, which has included this functionality since July 2026. For general production environments, the change arrives with the general availability of Windows 11 26H2. Devices currently running version 26H1 will adopt this default-on behavior automatically once they receive the subsequent feature update, according to Microsoft’s message center updates.

Did You Know?
This tool, formerly known as Windows Backup for Organizations, was first introduced at Microsoft Ignite in November 2024. It transitioned through a public preview phase in May 2025 before reaching general availability in August 2025.
Why Automated Backup Policies Matter
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this update affect existing backup configurations?
No. Microsoft states that if an administrator has already explicitly configured a backup policy (either enabled or disabled), the system will respect that choice and will not change it.
Can I disable this feature if it is enabled by default?
Yes. You can disable the backup policy at any time using Microsoft Intune or Group Policy. These management settings take precedence over the default system behavior.
Is the restore process also turned on by default?
No. While the backup process may be enabled by default, the restore functionality must still be explicitly configured by an administrator.
Does this apply to all regions globally?
No. The default-on behavior excludes regions governed by the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) and devices in sovereign or restricted cloud environments.
