Mexico Braces for Four Days of Freezing Temperatures and Rain as Pacific Humidity and Subtropical Jet Stream Interact

Article:

In the next four days, a combination of Pacific Ocean humidity, a subtropical jet stream, and a low-pressure channel will bring temperatures as low as -15°C and rain to several Mexican states. The Service Meteorological National (SMN) has warned that these phenomena will cause rain and showers with possible electrical discharges in various regions, including the Valley of Mexico.

The interaction of these weather systems will also create conditions for the possible fall of snow or sleet in elevations above 4,000 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) in the center and east of the country, affecting peaks such as Pico de Orizaba, Iztaccíhuatl, Popocatépetl, Sierra Negra, Nevado de Toluca, Cofre de Perote, and La Malinche.

From Sunday, December 22 to Wednesday, December 25, temperatures between -15°C and 0°C are expected in the following states:

  • Durango
  • Chihuahua
  • Baja California
  • Sonora
  • Zacatecas
  • San Luis Potosí
  • Michoacán
  • Jalisco
  • Aguascalientes
  • Estado de México
  • Hidalgo
  • Tlaxcala
  • Puebla

In addition to these low temperatures, heavy rain, downpours, and isolated showers are forecast for the following states:

Heavy Rain (25 to 50 mm):

  • Nuevo León
  • Tamaulipas
  • San Luis Potosí
  • Guanajuato
  • Querétaro
  • Hidalgo
  • Estado de México
  • Ciudad de México
  • Morelos
  • Jalisco
  • Colima
  • Michoacán
  • Guerrero
  • Oaxaca
  • Chiapas
  • Tabasco
  • Quintana Roo

Downpours (5 to 25 mm):

  • Coahuila
  • Durango
  • Zacatecas
  • Aguascalientes
  • Nayarit
  • Campeche
  • Yucatán

Isolated Showers (0.1 to 5 mm):

  • Coahuila
  • Durango
  • Zacatecas
  • Aguascalientes
  • Nayarit

To protect your health and well-being during these cold days, follow these tips:

  • Seal windows and doors to prevent drafts
  • Wear thermal clothing, coats, and socks even when indoors
  • If using gas heaters or fireplaces, ensure proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
  • Cover your nose and mouth to protect your airways from cold air
  • Gradually adapt your body to the cold before going outside
  • Drive carefully, as rain or ice can make roads slippery
  • Protect the most vulnerable, such as children and the elderly

Stay informed and prepared as Mexico faces these challenging weather conditions in the coming days.
