Snowfall Alert Issued for Northwest Norway and Trøndelag

Meteorologisk institutt has warned of forthcoming snowfall, with amounts ranging from 5 to 25 cm expected across parts of Nord-Westland and Trøndelag starting Sunday afternoon. In the mountains, snow accumulation could be even greater.

The weather service has issued the following advice:

  • Shield vulnerable installations and items that cannot withstand the expected snowfall.
  • Allocate extra time for transport and driving.
  • Equip vehicles with suitable tires and drive according to road conditions.
  • Continuous assessment of preparedness is the responsibility of relevant authorities.

This warning is in effect until Monday, 13:00.

A yellow snow alert has also been issued for areas in Vestland south of Stad and parts of the mountains in Southern Norway. Here too, snowfall between 5 to 25 cm is anticipated, with local accumulations up to 25 to 50 cm in mountainous regions. This warning is valid from Sunday, 16:00 to Monday, 16:00.

Potentially Challenging Driving Conditions

Meteorologist Emili Carin Rønning cautions that those planning to ring in the new year in the mountains should prepare for harsh conditions. "It will be rain today, transitioning to colder weather tomorrow, which could lead to difficult driving conditions, especially during the shift from milder temperatures to below freezing," she says. High winds and reduced visibility due to snowfall are also possible.

Significant Avalanche Risk

Significant avalanche risk is forecasted in various parts of the country. Orange avalanche alerts have been issued for Sunnmøre, Indre Fjordane, Jotunheimen, Indre Sogn, Voss, and Hardanger. Andreas Haslestad from NVE explains, "This situation generally applies to high-altitude regions where fresh snowfall is expected."

Meteorologisk institutt recommends:

  • Only venture into avalanche-prone areas if you have solid knowledge, route selection skills, and can identify potential avalanche hazards.
  • Generally, avoid avalanche-prone areas.
  • Avalanches may occasionally affect some avalanche-prone roads or populated areas.

Haslestad at NVE advises, "We recommend staying clear of avalanche-prone terrain, meaning slopes steeper than 30 degrees or areas where natural avalanches can reach you."
