Woman Detained at LAX with 82 Fireworks, Weapons, and pepper spray
Authorities at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) recently intercepted a haul of dangerous and prohibited items in a passenger’s carry-on luggage. The passenger, headed to Philadelphia, had an arsenal that included 82 fireworks, three knives, two replica firearms, and a canister of pepper spray.
The unusual discovery was made during a routine inspection at Terminal 4. A TSA agent spotted suspicious objects on the X-ray machine’s screen, prompting additional screening. The LAX bomb squad was promptly summoned to seize the fireworks, while local police officers conducted an interview with the passenger.
Jason Pantages, the federal security director for the TSA, described the incident as "extremingly concerning," given the sheer number of prohibited items found in a single carry-on bag. Pantages reminded travelers to double-check their luggage before heading to the airport, as the TSA advises: "When you pack, make sure FIDO ( Families, Infants, Dogs, and Others) stays home."
TSA regulations prohibit fireworks, explosives, and pepper spray in both carry-on and checked bags, regardless of their potency. Even though the passenger’s fireworks were of the consumer variety, their presence in an airplane violates security regulations. Meanwhile, bringing knives, replica firearms, and small amounts of pepper spray in carry-on luggage can result in further screening, interviews, and potential penalties.
For checked bags, up to 118 milliliters of pepper spray is allowed, provided it has a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. "Self-defense sprays that contain more than 2% by mass of deliquescent (CS or CN) or irritant (OC or Pauli) are prohibited in checked bags," according to the TSA’s official statement.
Pantages hopes this incident serves as a reminder for travelers to thoroughly inspect their luggage before arriving at the busy terminal. He suggests using the "What can I bring?" feature on the MyTSA app if unsure about a specific item.
Other prohibited items include flare pistols, flares, gunpowder, roman candles, beverages with alcohol content exceeding 140 degrees, bear spray, detonating capsules, butane, chlorine for pools and spas, CO2 cartridges, cooking spray, and more.
