With World Alzheimer’s Month approaching in September, medical specialists have outlined critical distinctions between normal aging, general cognitive decline, and specific neurodegenerative pathologies.

University of Miami Study Targets the X Chromosome
Biological sex represents one of the most powerful known predictors for neurodegenerative risk. Statistical data indicates that women are nearly twice as likely as men to develop Alzheimer’s disease. To uncover the root biological drivers behind this disparity, a research team at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine launched an investigation supported by an award from the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The institutional research group features Brian Kunkle, Eden Martin, Juan Young, and professor of public health sciences Lily Wang. Investigators plan to evaluate genetic, epigenetic, and molecular profiles from large, genetically diverse populations across the United States.

Despite representing nearly 5 percent of the human genome and housing approximately 800 protein-coding genes, the X chromosome has routinely been omitted from major genomic projects due to its complex inheritance patterns. Females possess two X chromosomes while males carry one. To achieve dosage compensation, most of one X chromosome is deactivated in females through X chromosome inactivation, though numerous genes escape this silencing.
Gender Differences in Dementia Diagnoses and Care
Clinical observations show divergent patterns between genders regarding specific neurodegenerative conditions. While women face a substantially higher incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, men exhibit a greater likelihood of developing vascular dementia, which serves as the second most prevalent cause of cognitive decline.
Gardner pointed out that demographic longevity plays a major role in prevalence figures. Women are living longer, so they are more likely to develop dementia because we have medicines for other diseases,
she observed, adding that social isolation, depression, and elevated caregiving stress may also elevate risk factors among women.
Furthermore, behavioral tendencies regarding healthcare utilization influence diagnostic statistics. Gardner indicated that women are more open or more likely to go to a GP than a man to get diagnosed.
Professor Rather concurred that symptom manifestations are driven primarily by the underlying dementia sub-type rather than patient gender alone.
Epigenetic Analysis and Precision Medicine Goals
Beyond baseline DNA sequence variations, the Miami research initiative will examine DNA methylation—chemical modifications that dictate whether specific genes remain active or dormant. These epigenetic alterations accumulate across an individual’s lifespan, aligning closely with aging, which remains the greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.
