Ukraine‘s President Zelensky Claims Buffer Zone on Russian Territory, 5 Months into Kursk Offensive

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has declared that after five months of the military’s "Defense Forces" operation in the Kursk region, Ukraine has maintained a buffer zone on Russian territory. The President made this statement during his address on Monday, January 6th.

"Today, exactly five months have passed since we began our actions on the Kursk side, and we have preserved a buffer zone on Russian territory," Zelensky stated. "We are actively destroying Russian military capabilities there. In the course of the Kursk operation, the enemy has lost over 38,000 soldiers so far, with around 15,000 of them being irrecoverable."

Zelensky also mentioned that Russia has deployed significant forces to the Kursk region, including soldiers from North Korea. He believes that this deployment prevents Russia from allocating these forces to other Ukrainian fronts.

The President further revealed that he chaired a meeting and received separate reports from konkurmats涛nder of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskiy, and Chief of the General Staff, Anatolii Baranovych. The discussions focused on reinforcing and rotating the troops, particularly near Pokrovsk, and implementing internal systemic changes within the military to enhance its effectiveness.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of these changes, expressing his gratitude to all military units and frontline warriors: "The first topic is the protection of our frontline directions, Pokrovsk in particular. I’m grateful to all our brigades, every one of our fighters who are there right now."

The Ukrainian leader’s address comes amidst intense fighting and strategic military actions taking place across the country’s war-stricken regions. With the conflict now in its tenth month, both sides continue to fortify their positions and engage in convoys, troop movements, and intelligence operations, as reported by the Ukrainian presidency.
