Title: Sofia‘s Plan for improved Access to Mount Vitocha: Winter Without a Working Lift
Article:
The much-anticipated plan for enhanced access to Mount Vitocha at the start of the year is yet to materialize, leaving no hope for a functional lift during this winter. This was confirmed by Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, following recent transport issues leading up to the peak.
Terziev, however, assures that the municipality is actively working to reduce traffic congestion around Vitocha and improve access via public transport. "It won’t happen this winter," he stated, reiterating his pledge from last spring that at least one lift would be operational by his term’s end in 2027.
Despite the setback, the mayor asserts that local authorities recognize Vitocha as one of the city’s significant assets and are committed to utilizing it better. Ironically, this articulation comes in the wake of the last lift, the Simeonovsky, ceasing operations in May 2024.
On the topic of lifts, Terziev expresses optimism, citing ongoing discussions with various ministries and interested parties. The project is longitudital, he admits, but the city’s goal remains to have a lift functioning by the end of his term.
Last winter’s lift closure has exacerbated Vitocha’s traffic woes. With no viable alternative for lift access, an increase in vehicle traffic is anticipated this season. Let’s hope the city’s plans progress swiftly.
