On January 4, 2000, one of the deadliest train disasters in modern Norwegian history occurred on the Rørosbanen line. A southbound regional train collided with a northbound local train, resulting in a catastrophic fire that claimed 19 lives. For former Midt-Hedmark Fire and Rescue Service Chief Nils-Erik Haagenrud, who led the emergency response, the memories of that day remain vivid and haunting. "Even with 37 years of experience, the Åsta train disaster is something I’ll never forget," he told TV 2.
Haagenrud described the scene as a massive challenge, then and now. He recalled that medical personnel at the scene had to administer sedatives to trapped survivors, knowing they would perish in the flames. They later had to cut out the bodies of the deceased. "It’s something that will always stay with me," Haagenrud said.

Rørosbanen Tragedy Marked 25 Years On
As the 25th anniversary of the disaster approaches, a memorial event will be held in Åmot. Organized by thejavå 25 years since the fatal collision, a memorial event will be held in Åmot. The commemoration, set for 1 PM at the Åsta memorial site, will feature speeches by Jernbaneadministrasjonen Director Knut Sletta, Bane NOR CEO Thor Gjermund Eriksen, and Åmot Mayor Ole Erik Hørstad (H). Synnøve Sakura Heggem will recite poems during the ceremony.
Åmot Church will be open for those seeking a quiet space or a conversation from 10 AM to 5 PM.
