There are currently 34,054 artificial objects in Earth’s low orbit, reflecting an increase of 956 over the past three months, according to data published in NASA’s Orbital Debris Quarterly News.
Spacecraft and rocket components make up orbital objects
Of the more than 34,000 tracked objects currently in orbit, roughly 19,000 consist of operational and decommissioned spacecraft. Another 14,900 objects are made up of rocket stages and various components that have accumulated in space over decades of launches.
National Share of Orbiting Objects
The United States leads all nations with 18,300 tracked objects in orbit, which includes 13,600 spacecraft and 4,700 rocket stages and debris. Russia ranks second with 6,575 objects, having decreased its total by 11 over the past three months. China places third with 5,737 objects, marking an increase of 104 over a single month.
Other nations maintain smaller footprints in low Earth orbit. The United Kingdom follows with 727 objects, France accounts for 649, Japan has 322, and India tracks 191. The European Space Agency holds responsibility for 132 objects, while remaining countries and organizations account for the final 1,398 items.
Small debris fragments threaten satellites and crewed spacecraft
NASA statistics do not capture the actual total volume of debris in low Earth orbit. Certain objects remain too small for tracking systems to monitor, and these smaller fragments exist in much greater numbers. Even a tiny piece of debris traveling at orbital velocity can cause severe damage to an operational satellite or threaten crewed spacecraft.
