OMS Quantifies WHO makes new recommendations for Ebola treatments, calls for improved …”>Ebola Risk in DRC: High Locally, Low Nationally, and Globally

The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the overall public health risk associated with Ebola outbreaks in affected communities as high, while the national risk in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is considered low due to the event’s localized nature. Despite this, the UN health agency warns that the rising malnutrition levels observed in Panzi, the affected health zone, could be replicated elsewhere in the country.

"Many other areas of the DRC are witnessing increasing levels of malnutrition, and what has been observed in Panzi could happen elsewhere in the country," the WHO stated, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance.

In a reassuring note, the organization confirmed that the risk remains low at the regional and global levels. However, the high risk assessment in affected communities underscores the importance of ongoing response efforts to contain and prevent further spread of the virus.

The current Ebola outbreak in the DRC, declared in February 2021, has so far claimed 55 lives, with 20 cases confirmed, 10 probable, and 50 suspected cases under investigation. Over 300 people have been vaccinated against Ebola in the affected areas as part of the ongoing response efforts.
