Article Body:

In the early hours of March 8, 2025, under the cloak of darkness, a beacon of hope will emerge as the ALS Sunrise Walk takes to the streets of Utrecht. Among the sea of participants will be Myrthe, from the nearby town of Alphen aan den Rijn, who will be walking alongside thousands of others in support of a cause that hits close to home.

Myrthe’s team, ‘Buurman en Buurman,’ was established as a tribute to the late Willem de Jong, a man and father-in-law who unfortunately lost his battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Willem’s buurman, Maykel Simonis, continues to wage his own fight against this relentless disease.

Understanding ALS

ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a merciless condition that gradually attacks the body’s muscle-control functions. After the initial symptoms, most ALS patients succumb to the disease within three to five years. Currently, no available medication can cure or slow down this degenerative neurological and muscular disorder. The ripple effects of this cruel affliction extend beyond the individual, deeply impacting their loved ones as well.

Taking Steps Towards a Cure

Myrthe and her team are not lone warriors in this battle. Neighbors, friends, and families like theirs are uniting to raise awareness and funds for much-needed ALS research. Together, they strive to generate a substantial sum that could propel us one step closer to unraveling the mysteries of ALS and finding a cure.

You can join Myrthe and her teammates by donating to their cause on the ALS Sunrise Walk website today. Every contribution brings us closer to a world without ALS.
