In the chilly glow of the early morning, enthusiasts gathered in the Bulgarian town of Kalofar to participate in a time-honored tradition: the Mogleto Horho (Young Men’s Good) river plunge on Epiphany. The event kicked off with lively dancing, the melodious strains of gaida (bagpipes), and an infectious sense ofgood cheer. Therezusters were eager to forge ahead, undeterred by the frozen waters of the River Tundzha.
This year brought a unique twist as Father Dimitar blessed not just the cross, but also the river’s waters. Former mayor of Kalofar, Roumen Stoyanov, shared his enthusiasm for the tradition, stating, “The icy plunge is an important public event that’s met with joy and approval by the people.”
As the clock struck 08:00, the ice over the river was broken, signaling the start of the annual procession. A young man rescued the cross and passed it onto the smallestparticipant, three-year-old Miroslav.
