Thirty-one years after hitting theaters, the cult-classic film Clueless is officially returning as a six-episode sequel series at Paramount+. Star Alicia Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher Horowitz, with filming slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027 under a team including Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
The Beverly Hills icon is trading her high school wardrobe for the complexities of modern parenting.
Cher Horowitz Returns as a Working Mother and Teen Parent
The project picks up three decades after the events of the original 1995 Paramount Pictures movie, presenting a very different phase of life for its protagonist.
The original film famously shot at locations including Occidental College in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of L.A., Circus Liquor in North Hollywood and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the series will shoot on location in L.A., according to Paramount+.

Creative Leadership and a Long Journey to Production
The green light from Paramount+ caps a seven-year journey by CBS Studios, which owns the TV rights to Clueless, to get a series based on the classic movie starring Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd off the ground. The studio initially developed a different Clueless series with different writers centered around Dash’s Dionne character, which was set up to Peacock for development in 2020 and involved Cher disappearing and her best friend Dionne investigating. It ultimately did not move forward. CBS Studios went on to take another stab at the IP with a new creative team, Schwartz, Savage and Weiss, and Silverstone on board as Cher. That sequel series again landed at Peacock in April 2025. A year later, the NBCUniversal streamer passed on it.
Following changes under the new Paramount+ regime, the project found a new home as an eventized, limited series version of the project that was previously in development at Peacock. The series is written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C., Gossip Girl, Nancy Drew) under their Fake Empire banner alongside Jordan Weiss (Freakier Friday, Dollface), with original film’s writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence also returning as executive producers alongside Silverstone.
Production Timeline and California Tax Credits
According to sources, the production has submitted paperwork with the California Film Commission to receive state tax subsidies, positioning the series to film locally in Los Angeles in 2027. The production structure keeps the franchise fully in-house under Paramount-owned CBS Studios, whereas Universal Television was attached as co-studio when the project was set up at Peacock.
The greenlight makes sense on a number of fronts because Paramount+ has been in the market for more female-skewing content ever since the Paramount-Skydance merger was completed and Cindy Holland took on oversight of Paramount’s direct-to-consumer business. To that end, Holland’s team has already commissioned the legal drama “Discretion” starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning as well as the limited series “Fear Not” starring Anne Hathaway. Additionally, the project arrives after Clueless celebrated its 30th anniversary last July with a cast and director reunion at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry earlier this year.
