Top Dutch Gynecologist Speaks Out: ‘If Men Faced This Problem, We’d Act Faster’
AMSTERDAM — In an interview with Nu.nl, prominent Dutch gynecologist Dr. Marije Roeder has criticized the slow pace at which certain women’s health issues are being addressed, stating, "If men faced these problems, we’d be acting much faster."
Dr. Roeder, who works at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, is referring to conditions like endometriosis and menstrual disorders, which affect a significant number of women but often receive less attention than conditions predominantly affecting men.
Endometriosis, for instance, affects an estimated one in ten women worldwide. Yet, it often goes undiagnosed, with sufferers experiencing years of chronic pain before receiving proper treatment.
"It’s not that we’re not concerned about women’s health," explained Dr. Roeder, "but when it comes to conditions that predominantly affect us, we seem to struggle to prioritize them."
She believes that had these conditions predominantly affected men, society would have taken moreSteps to address them.
"Consider prostate cancer or testicular cancer," she said. "Whenever men’s health is concerned, we see immediate action and significant funding."
Dr. Roeder is now calling for more awareness and betterœresearch into women’s health issues.
"We need to destigmatize these conditions, educate the public about them, and fund research to find better treatments and ultimately, cures," she said.
Her comments echo those of other health professionals and advocates who have long highlighted the disparity in research funding and attention given to conditions affecting men versus those affecting women.
Hopefully, Dr. Roeder’s remarks will spark further discussion and action on this important issue.
