Headline: Brace for Human Metapneumovirus: Jakarta Timur Urges Clean and Healthy Living Habits
Subhead: As virus cases surge in China, locals advised to prioritize hygiene and monitor vulnerable groups

In a proactive measure to prevent the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in East Jakarta, Head of the Health Department Herwin Meifrendy is urging residents to adopt clean and healthy living habits (PHBS). Although there have been no confirmed cases of the virus in the area so far, Meifrendy emphasizes the importance of vigilance and precaution.
"HMPV, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, can cause respiratory infections with symptoms similar to the common flu, such as coughing, runny nose, fever, and sore throat," Meifrendy explained on Friday, January 10. He emphasized the need for residents to be cautious and maintain good hygiene by regularly washing hands and wearing masks.
The at-risk groups most susceptible to HMPV infection include infants, adults aged 65 and above, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic respiratory conditions. Meifrendy warned that the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals, respiratory droplets, or contaminated surfaces.
For those who contract HMPV, Meifrendy advises ample rest, hydration, and supportive care. He also mentioned that antiviral medication can be prescribed for severe cases.
Currently, several countries, including Hong Kong and Japan, are stepping up monitoring and taking preventive measures due to the increasing number of HMPV cases, particularly among children and the elderly, in China. Meifrendy highlighted that there is currently no vaccine available for HMPV, making prevention and treatment focused on managing symptoms.
As the global health landscape continues to evolve, staying informed and adopting healthy habits are crucial to safeguarding the well-being of individuals and communities.
