Authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man following a violent stabbing attack in Burbank that claimed the life of a local teacher and left her adult daughter hospitalized.

The incident began around 6 a.m. Monday at a residence on North Brighton Street. Police arriving at the scene discovered 59-year-old Arti Varma and her 25-year-old daughter, Meera Varma, suffering from stab wounds.
Arti Varma was transported to a hospital, where she later died. Her daughter was also hospitalized and has been reported in stable condition.
Following a day-long investigation, a SWAT team served a search warrant at a home on the 500 block of East Palm Avenue around 10 p.m. Monday. There, police took Sergio Fraire into custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Arti Varma was a first-grade teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School. Friends and colleagues described her as a “bright light” who was deeply proud of her students.
