In a quaint neighborhood of Malaysia, Asia”>Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, lies a house that appears to be an unassuming shack from the outside, yet within its walls resides a secret that has left many astonished. The house belonging to Baharuddin Mamat has fooled many with its dilapidated exterior, but a peek inside reveals a lavish, palatial interior that has gone viral for reasons more than one.
The humble exterior of the house, primarily constructed from sheet metal, belies the extravagant decor within. A video that has been circulating on social media showcases the stark contrast, showing off gilded walls, ornate furniture, and luxurious fittings that would not seem out of place in a palace. The floors are adorned with sleek ceramic tiles, and the walls are lined with zink and plywood Sheet panels, all gleaming with a gold finish.
The Inside Story
The 66-year-old ‘Pok Din Lejeng’, as Baharuddin is affectionately known, built this house of contrasts over three years. Intended as a place for rest and prayer, the house is equipped with air conditioning, a computer, and even a karaoke system complete with WiFi connectivity. The house also features a library, a place for ablution, and a bathroom with a bathtub worthy of a five-star hotel.
Baharuddin’s inspiration? None other than the grand Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Hassanal Bolkiah. "I was captivated by the beauty and opulence of the Sultan’s Palace when I watched it on YouTube," he said. "And thus, I was inspired to decorate my home with gold."
The exterior, on the other hand, Baharuddin intentionally left unassuming. "I believe that the appearance of a house is secondary to its interior," he explained. The exterior boasts a vintage blue motorcycle, scattered parking signs, and various odds and ends strewn about, adding to the overall charm of this whimsical abode.
The Making and Cost
Baharuddin estimates that the total cost of constructing the house is around RM 11,000 (approximately Rp 36 million). A significant portion of this, RM 7,000 (around Rp 23 million), was spent on the lavish bathroom alone.
The Viral Sensation
Baharuddin’s unique house has sparked a surge of curiosity and admiration on social media. The elderly man, who runs a sour-asam pedas stall, is humbled by the outpouring of positive comments from netizens. He dreams of someday owning a small villa.
