Heads Up: Red Tide Algae Advisory in Drents-Friese Wold
Staatsbosbeheer has issued a warning regarding red tide algae in the Spartelvijver, located between Appelscha and Elsloo in the Drents-Friese Wold.
While red tide algae, or harmful algal blooms (HABs), are typically associated with warm weather, this occurrence is an anomaly. Usually found in mountainous regions, red tide algae can sometimes appear in the Netherlands even at lower temperatures. The water turns a distinctive reddish-purple hue during these blooms, but as temperatures rise, the algae naturally subsides.

Staatsbosbeheer advises pet owners to keep their dogs and horses away from the water and prevent them from drinking or playing in it. The water is also unsafe for human consumption and contact.
