Earthquake of Magnitude 2.9 Hits Southwest Bulgaria

A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 struck the region around Gotse Delchev, southwestern Bulgaria, according to data from the National Seismological Center at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The earthquake was recorded at 17:42 local time.

The epicenter was located approximately 30 kilometers from the town of Dospat, 50 kilometers from the town of Krnska, and around 120 kilometers from the capital, Sofia.

While the earthquake was relatively mild, it serves as a reminder of Bulgaria’s location in a seismically active region. The country has experienced several significant earthquakes in the past, most notably the 1977 Sofia earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 5.3 and caused significant damage and loss of life.

The National Seismological Center urges the public to stay informed about earthquake safety measures and reminds them that the best course of action during an earthquake is to "Drop, Cover, and Hold On."
